Description

Whether you should buy it depends on how you like to work and what you expect from your paints.

This paint has some clear strengths: it uses a natural charcoal pigment (PBk8), so you get a soft, earthy black rather than a harsh synthetic one. The fact it’s semi-opaque and non-staining is useful if you like lifting, blending, or correcting areas—especially in watercolour techniques where control matters. Excellent lightfastness also means your work won’t fade quickly over time. Gum arabic (acacia) is a standard, reliable binder, so it should behave predictably on good paper.

The trade-off is that charcoal-based blacks can be less intense than modern pigment blacks (like lamp black or ivory black mixes), and the handling can feel a bit more “granular” or textured depending on the paper.

So it’s a good choice if you:

  • like traditional, natural materials
  • want a liftable, adjustable black for layering
  • value subtle, soft tonal effects over deep, dense black

It’s less ideal if you want:

  • very strong, high-density black coverage
  • super uniform, opaque flat washes

If you tell me what you usually paint (landscapes, portraits, sketching, etc.), I can give a more specific recommendation.
